Approximately 28 mm in diameter and 20 mm thick, with seeds of varying shapes and sizes, the seed coat is particularly hard, resistant, and polishable. Its previous scientific name was Dioclea reflexa. Traditionally kept in homes, carried in pockets, or worn as necklaces to ward off the evil eye, it is considered a protective charm or good luck charm in tropical America and even as far north as Europe when it washes up on a beach after a long journey.
